“Hey. So there was a bank robbery. That’s great. I wanted to see it too
“That’s not good. I wasn’t playing around. They were armed, and I heard that Japan was safe, but seems that’s not true.”
“Both of you, don’t do anything too dangerous, okay?”
Michiko prepared some of the snacks she gave Katherine as a prize, so we sat at the counter and chatted about today’s events. Well, I’m not the one talking though.
Still, it’s interesting to see Alice seriously telling a story that would normally only be considered a boasting about their past bank robberies, but the two reaction to it were also quite funny. I couldn’t say anything about it since we just met, but I get the impression that Catherine was an innocent girl with a lot of curiosity, so I didn’t think she’s putting much thought into what she says. However, Michiko, who can definitely be called an adult, although she said we should be careful, she didn’t seem to mind it that much.
Was it a relationship of trust? If a normal adult knew that the children were doing such a dangerous thing, they would probably stop them by force. No, since Alice called this place a hideout and the owner of the place had not informed the committee of the existence of stray magical girls, it was clear that she was someone who is not considered a “decent adult” to the general public.
I didn’t personality to insert myself, so I was drinking milk and eating cookies like Catherine, and Alice, who was watching me, brought up the subject.
“Are you curious about our relationship?”
“Well, to an extent.”
“I guess so. However, it’s not that complicated. Especially in this day and age, it’s nothing unusual.”
Alice, who was the only one drinking black coffee that looked extremely bitter, explained.
“You knew that I ran away from a foreign country, right?”
“Well, just from what I heard from the Empress. The Institute gave you ‘extra care’, so you ran away from there, right?”
“Yes, that’s right. Then, a while after I fled to this country, ‘Wanderer’ appeared around here. Well, I was in a position where I was being chased by a lot of people, so I didn’t have the luxury to even exterminate the monsters at that time, but I couldn’t just let it be, and I ended up interfering.”
“Alice-chan saved me when I was being attacked. She is my lifesaver.”
‘It was tough back then’, Michiko said, but you couldn’t really tell how difficult it was from the calm manner she said that. However, in places where monsters actually appear, most people become ill due to the malice, and some even suffer from aftereffects. Naturally, it is common for work to be disrupted, or for businesses or shops to be closed if it was nearby. Not only that, but there were also a small number of people who said they didn’t want to visit the places where the Wanderer has appeared.
The shop used as a hideout still remained in its original form when it would have been fully functional. Although to an untrained eye, it appears to have been well-maintained, so I can imagine that it was used for business until recently.
“I knew about the existence of magical girls from TV, so I wasn’t really surprised. …At that time Alice-chan seemed really hungry. She was about to collapse, so I tried to call the police or an ambulance, but she stopped me… I thought I’d have to contact her home, but I was told that that wasn’t possible either.”
“I didn’t want to cause too much trouble, but after I explained the situation, she started sheltering me. At the time, I was on the wanted list, and I told her that it was dangerous, but Michiko is surprisingly stubborn despite her appearance.”
“It’s only natural for children to trouble. Besides, you didn’t seem like a bad person, and you actually saved me. If you won’t let me return the favor, if my family knew this, they’d be furious at me.”
Despite the age difference between the two who laughed together, it was clear that they had built a relationship that one could call friendship.
“That’s why we’re currently living here as a form of helping each other out. Well, in reality it’s non-interfering, but we’re at least in a relationship where we don’t interfere too much.”
“Hmm…Then, was Catherine with you at that time? Foreigners, that means she isn’t magical girls of this country, right? No, I guess that’s not certain huh…?”
“It’s similar, but it’s a little different. Katherine was the girl I spent time with when I was at the institute. But she wasn’t with me when that incident happened and I ran away. This child secretly came to Japan under cover of darkness, and I happened to see her stealing all over the place, so I took her into custody.”
“Wait!? I’m not a thief or a robber! I’m a phantom thief!! I’m a modern-day thief who defeat evil and helps the good!!”
Catherine jumped from her chair and stood up, puffing out her chest and answering confidently.
She declared so boldly that it looked like a halo was shining on her, but on the other hand, Alice’s expression was one that tease her.
“A phantom thief huh… When I found you, you seemed to be begging for a reward from the client. Is that what a phantom thief is like?”
“Ugh… I was hungry at that time…”
“If you’re hungry something something. I’m not saying it’s wrong to accept compensation, but I think you’re too pretty to be a phantom thief.”
“Muu… But, there’s no doubt that I’m a phantom thief!”
I heard the word phantom thief, which is far from magical girl. For a moment, it crossed my mind that she was using magic to do evil things, but since she calls herself a phantom thief, she must be acting based on her own sense of justice.
“Phantom thief?”
“This kid is doing things like taking things back from people who steal from places where ‘Wanderers’ appear, the so-called fire thieves, and returning them to the original owners. He goes out of his way to send notices, using a form that exposes that person’s evil deeds. Have you heard about the Phantom Thief Joker? I think it’s become quite a hot topic these days.”
“Absolutely nothing. I may have heard it somewhere, but I didn’t really pay attention to it.”
“Why!! You should know about my activities!! If someone Phantom Thief Joker, it’s the hottest topic right now!!”
“No, even if you say that…what’s the difference with a robbery?”
“It’s completely different!!! I’m making sure I don’t hurt anyone, and I’m sorting out the bad!! Besides, I’m a chivalrous thieve! Don’t put me with those who satisfy their greed for their own gain!”
I couldn’t help but cover my ears as a loud noise was heard in my ear.
When I hear a thief, I get a sense of a hero, so it’s not that I’m not interested in it, but if I just hear a phantom thief, I have no idea how it’s different from a normal thief. Of course, it would be rude of me to treat them the same as the scoundrel I met today, and she was probably acting according to some kind of policy.
Anyway, before my ears explode, I tried to calm her down and asked her why she’s doing something like a phantom thief. Catherine, unable to hide her anger, gulped down her milk in one gulp as she explained.
“Because no one is trying to help? Even though there are so many people in trouble…everyone is just thinking about themselves. Even the magical girls are only focused on the monster and act like they didn’t care what happened after that. Even if you were saved from the clutches of a monster, there’s many things you need to survive the next morning. Well, I know that stealing someone else’s things is wrong. But I didn’t become a magical girl to defeat Wanderer, I became a magical girl because I wanted to help people in trouble! That’s why, as a phantom thief, I use magic as I see fit. No matter what anyone says.”
She declares excitedly, and then ordered another refill of her milk.
Certainly I didn’t care much about what happens after I finishes subjugating ‘Wanderer’. Partly because I was simply a stray magical girl and tried not to interact with others much, but also because I thought it wasn’t a hero’s job to do that. However, the girl in front of her probably believes that her own justice was to help those left behind.
“It would be wrong to say that they didn’t try to help, but it’s true that they are slow to move in the aftermath of ‘Wanderer’. The committee, the police, and many people wouldn’t be happy about using magic for anything other than exterminating monsters, and phantom thievery is out of the question. You could probably say that the robbery we took care of today was not something a magical girl would normally sortie for. But I can’t turn a blind eye to that. You thought so too, that’s why you were there, right?”
“Well, you’re right that I can’t turn a blind eye, but I don’t have deep thoughts like you guys do.”
“Regardless of the process, it is important that you understand our philosophy of action. I told you before right. I have things I want to do, so I can’t go along with Empress’s proposal. That’s how I felt when I fled to this country. Why is it that even though there are so many magical girls on the side of justice, the number of people suffering from misfortune never decreases? That the hammer of justice is only aimed at monsters. I think you got the general idea, but all the magical girls gathered here have these feelings in mind. It’s something like Stray Federation, where people use the power of magic to help someone, so they don’t have to be tied down by anyone, and they stick to their justice even if it’s against the law. I’m sure the Empress won’t approve of something like this, but I think you’re acting with similar feelings in mind.”
After saying that, Alice reached out her hand for a handshake.
“So, how about it? why don’t you join us?”
Her eyes, shining with anticipation, were staring straight at me.
